Kilcoy Race Club
DESCRIPTION
HistoryHorse racing in Kilcoy dates back to 1887 where the first races were held at a track carved around the Glen Fern Hotel's paddock with guidance from secretary John McPherson whose father Alexander owned the pub. The treasurer was Thomas Walker. The club was called the Glen Rock Race Club. In 1906, the club became the Hopetoun Race Club and the secretary was Mr. J. S. Poole. That first racetrack was situated a few miles from what was to become the town of Kilcoy. It was near Villeneuve. Racing continued there through the early 1900's. A new track was built, or carved out to be more precise, at Hazeldean where racing commenced on Saturday May 19, 1928. There were six races of three and four furlongs. The club was known as the Hazeldean Turf Club and also as the Kilcoy Turf Club. Gus Ferling, a grazier and horse lover, was largely responsible for a relocation of the racetrack from Hazeldean to the current site of the Kilcoy Showgrounds. The new track was described by participants as "excellent". The club was to become known as the Hazeldean-Kilcoy Race Club. The opening meeting was on 30th October 30, 1946. The Queensland TAB commenced operations on 11th August, 1962. In January 2011, floods destroyed much of the Kilcoy Racetrack. Repairs were completed but costly.Other NamesHazeldean Turf ClubKilcoy Turf ClubGlen Rock Race ClubHopetoun Race ClubTypeSportsReferencesKilcoy Race Club History by Paul Dolan.
