Military
Military involvement in the Somerset region started during the Boer War. People across the region have signed up to serve in various conflicts, and some small towns lost considerable numbers of their young men. Most of the towns and localities across the region feature a memorial or plaque to commemorate these soldiers including at the Esk Cenotaph or the Colinton War Memorial. Military presences in the region have included the airfields at Tarampa near Lowood and at Watts Bridge. After WWI there was a soldier settlement set up at Coominya, which was stopped after only four years.
The connection to military history is also preserved and celebrated at the various Returned Service League sub-branches across the region.
