The railways have been influential in the development and settlement of the Somerset region. The railways enabled the timber industry and farmers to transport their produce to markets. The Brisbane Valley line was extended to Lowood in 1884, and then in various stages until the line reached Yarraman in 1913. Kilcoy was on a separate railway line that extended from Caboolture.
