Religion has been important in the region with churches being some of the first buildings erected in towns. The German community had a strong influence, opening Lutheran, Apostolic and Baptist churches. Services were held in the German language until the government prevented this around WWI. There is a multitude of churches around the region including Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and Churches of Christ denominations. The Caboonbah Undenominational Church is an example of people overcoming denominational barriers to build a church. Many early churches also had a cemetery attached, which continue to be independently operated.
