HistoryToogoolawah was the first town in the shire to obtain electricity due to an agreement with the European directors of the Nestle Condensed Milk Factory at Toogoolawah. The Toogoolawah Amateur Gardening and Progress Association advocated for an electricity supply at it's 1922 Annual General Meeting. It took five years to achieve. The committee approached the directors of the Nestle Condensed Milk Factory in 1924 to consider a proposal for generating electricity. A public meeting was held in Alexandra Hall by the shire council in October 1924 to listen to Nestle Condensed Milk Factory's proposal to supply electricity at 10d per unit to customers. In the proposal the council was to provide the mains infrastructure and carry out the installation. There were initially 129 customers, and lighting charges gazetted on 23 December 1926 were 1s.6d per unit with 25% discount. Power was 9d per unit to consumers and 8d per unit to council. Consumers continually complained that the charges were too high. The Toogoolawah electricity supply was live on 20th June 1927, by Mrs Smith, the wife of the Esk Shire Council Chairman. Toogoolawah had electricity five to six years before other towns in the region.Date20th June 1927TypeCommunityReferencesConfidence & Tradition: A History of the Esk Shire by Ruth Kerr.
