BiographyJoseph North, a Lieutenant in the 68th Light Infantry Regiment came out to New South Wales in 1841. He was in charge of the military guard on board the ship, Sarah, which carried the last contingent of convicts to New South Wales. Soon after, his family, including his father Major North, joined him in New South Wales. The Norths relocated to Queensland early in 1843 and bought Fernie Lawn Station from the Uhr brothers. Fernie Lawn was the nearest station to Ipswich on the Brisbane River. Wivenhoe Homestead was bought by the Norths in 1849 and another property named Northbrook, on the east side of the River was also purchased. Sheep were run at Wivenhoe Homestead and cattle on the other properties. Mr Joseph North lived initially at Fernie Lawn but later at Wivenhoe Homestead. Major North lived in Bellevue. During the 1860s the Norths sold Bellevue and divided other stations among familymembers. ReferencesNorth Family Factsheet. Esk: Somerset Regional Council. (Held at Esk Library).
