HistoryThe oldest cemetery that served the Toogoolawah district, and the German Reserve in particular, was that of the Apostolic Church, Mt. Beppo, where Mrs Emestine Christine Grienke and her infant son were buried on the 28th of January, 1884. They were actually buried on private family land that was later given to the church as a cemetery by the widower, Wilhelm E. Grienke, in honour of his late wife and son.
The next recorded burial was that of Henry Teske in 1893, aged 74, followed by William Leisermann, aged 10 months. In 1904, there is a record of a baby, Gustaf Grienke, who died on the 26th of October, 1904 “age 6 hours”. Lauret Gutzke, aged 83, was also buried there in 1908.
There are German inscriptions on headstones in both the Apostolic and Lutheran cemeteries.
The Lutheran and the Apostolic Church can be reached by turning off the Brisbane Valley Highway into Mt. Beppo Road, which makes a T-junction with the highway opposite the Toogoolawah State School grounds. The road has been euphemistically signposted “The Highway to Heaven” by the local wags, because it also leads to the Lutheran Cemetery.
Records of who, when and the ages of those who were buried at the Toogoolawah Apostolic & Lutheran cemeteries are listed in the factsheet.TypeChurches & CemeteriesTownsToogoolawah & SurroundsReferencesLocal Cemeteries (Toogoolawah) Apostolic & Lutheran Factsheet.
