Natural disasters have changed and shaped life in the Somerset region. Living close to and around river and creek catchments, the area is prone to flooding resulting in damage to homes, businesses, infrastructure, as well as loss of livestock and crops . Major floods have occurred across multiple years from 1893 to the more recent 2011 floods. Conversely, prolonged droughts in the region have had significant effects on farming productivity and increased the chance of bushfires in the region.
