Henry Plantagenet Somerset
DESCRIPTION
BiographyThe Somerset region is named after Henry Plantagenet Somerset. Henry was a politician and was the chairman of the Esk Division Board from 1901 to 1902. Somerset was a liberal politician who represented the state district of Stanley in South East Queensland in the Legislative Assembly from 1904 to 1920. He canvassed successfully for the extension of the railway through the Brisbane River Valley to the rich timber reserves in the Blackbutt Range and beyond. Both the Somerset Dam and the local government region of Somerset are named in his honour. He served his community in local and state government for thirty years. Henry Somerset died on 11th April 1936 with his siblings, wife and eldest son predeceasing him. He is buried in Caboonbah Undenominational Church cemetery which he helped to establish. He penned his own epitaph, “Write me as one who loves his fellow man.”ReferencesHistory and Profile – Durundur Divisional Board, Esk Divisional Board and Esk Shire Council 1879-2008.
