William Butler was born in Royston, Cambridgeshire on 11th November 1831 . He arrived in Sydney in February 1854 on the Castle Eden. He was appointed manager of Cressbrook Station in 1861. He then went to Albinia near Comet to work for Louis Hope in 1867, then to Durundur from 1871 to work for McConnels. He purchased Durundur Homestead after the crash in 1893 when it was open for selection. He lived there until his death on 6th June 1917. He was called "Hellfire Billy" because he continually burnt off dry grass.
