Private Cross was an artist who illustrated his experiences on the Western Front with drawings and cartoons. The Australian War Memorial holds several examples of his work in its art collection. Thomas Cross came to Australia when he was five years old and later in his life, his family moved to Linville when he was thirteen. He lived and worked on the family farm. After many years of working hard he felt frustrated and decided to pursue his a creative life. He studied art In Sydney and became a photographer, often revisiting Linville. He enlisted in the WWI in 1915 and drew many sketches depicting the war. He combined artistry and a sense of humour. He became a member of the first Progress Association in Linville and with his brothers designed the Linville War Memorial.
In 2018 an Exhibition at the Condensary Gallery focused on World War 1 included pieces of his work.
