Toogoolawah Cemetery
DESCRIPTION
HistoryThe Toogoolawah Cemetery is still located in the surveyed town of Biarra, several kilometres north of Toogoolawah. There are no records for this cemetery before 1904. Those records that are available from Esk Shire Council reinforce how dangerous childbirth and infancy were at the beginning of the 20th century. A little girl, Alison Harding, aged 1 year, was buried in the Toogoolawah Cemetery in 1904. The second recorded buried there was that of Mary Gannon and her infant on 11th of May, 1910.
The non-denominational Union Church (now Apostolic Church of Queensland, near State School and Pre-School buildings) served the district where the cemetery is located from 1887 until its removal in 1906 to the township of Toogoolawah, and it is unbelievable that there were so few burials recorded unless some of the early records have been lost.
The oldest surviving tombstone in the Toogoolawah Cemetery is that of an adult, John Arnold, together with several of his family who died after him.
There is a child’s grave right at the entrance to this cemetery with the inscription, “In loving memory of Doreen Martha Clarke, died 25 May 1929”. Two other children’s graves are marked with a lamb (Beryl Eastaughffe) and the lower parts only of a cherub (Mavis Rose Jones).
Burials were also conducted in Caboonah Denominational Church after 1905 and can still be seen in the grounds of Caboonbah Homestead.
Records of who, when and the ages of those who were buried at the Toogoolawah Cemetery are listed in the factsheet.
